<title>FP7 (EU Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development)</title>
<description><![CDATA[FP7 supports research in selected priority areas - the aim being to make, or keep, the EU as a world leader in those sectors. The Framework is also designed to respond to Europe's employment needs and competitiveness.

FP7 is made up of 4 main blocks of activities forming 4 specific programmes (Cooperation, Ideas, People, Capacities) plus a fifth specific programme on nuclear research.

The majority of available funding is within the Cooperation block.  This is focussed on collaborative research projects involving groups of organisations from a minimum of 3 European states.  Projects must fall within one of a number of defined themes, <br><br>Research must come under one of the FP7 themes.

Companies must perform research in collaboration with associates in a least two other member states.

<title>Eurostars Programme</title>
<description><![CDATA[Eurostars Programme is a new Funding Programme for SME's. 

Eurostars is a programme enabling industries and institutes across Europe and beyond to collaborate in a bottom-up approach to developing and exploiting close-to-market technologies. 
<br><br>All businesses that fulfil the EU-adopted definition of an SME and are based in a Eurostars participating country are welcome to apply.

Furthermore, they have to invest 10% of turnover or 10% full time equivalent effort into research.

<title>Collaborative Research and Development Grants</title>
<description><![CDATA[Collaborative Research and Development (formerly the DTI Technology Programme) is designed to assist the industrial and research communities to work together on R&amp;D projects in strategically important areas of science, engineering and technology - from which successful new products, processes and services can emerge. 

Regular competitions for funding of collaborative R&amp;D projects have been held since 2004, and by June 2007 a portfolio of over 600 projects was being supported with a combined business and Government investment in excess of 1 billion. 

In the past year the scope of the collaborative R&amp;D competitions has been expanded to support large projects as well as smaller projects approved within faster timescales. 


<br><br>Projects must include 2 or more collaborators at least one of which is from a business.

<title>R&amp;D Tax Credits</title>
<description><![CDATA[Research and development (R&amp;D) tax credits are a company tax relief which can either reduce a company's tax bill or, for some small or medium sized companies, provide a cash sum. The R&amp;D tax credit works by allowing companies to deduct up to 150% of qualifying expenditure on R&amp;D activities when calculating their profit for tax purposes. 

Companies which are SMEs can, in certain circumstances, surrender this tax relief to claim payable tax credits in cash from the HM Revenue &amp; Customs.<br><br>-Employing staff directly and actively engaged in carrying out R&amp;D,  -Paying a staff provider for staff provided to the company who are directly and actively engaged in carrying out R&amp;D
-consumable or transformable materials used directly in carrying out R&amp;D (broadly, physical materials which are consumed in the R&amp;D), and   power, water, fuel and computer software used directly in carrying out R&amp;D.

<title>Brian Mercer Award for Innovation </title>
<description><![CDATA[The Brian Mercer Award for Innovation provides funding for individuals or groups to develop an already proven concept or prototype in the general areas of the built environment, nanoscience/nanotechnology, clean technology and energy, through to the creation of a near-market product for commercial exploitation, i.e. to a stage where an approach for venture capital becomes a reality. <br><br>The Brian Mercer Awards for Innovation are open to applicants of any nationality who have a PhD (or are of equivalent standing in their profession) and who hold a substantive post in such an establishment and will be in post at the host organisation for at least the duration of the project.  The project must be commenced within three months of the date of notification.

<title>Royal Society Mullard Award</title>
<description><![CDATA[The Royal Society Mullard Award is presented every two years to by the Council of the Royal Society to an individual who has an outstanding academic record in any area of natural science, engineering or technology and whose work is currently making or has the potential to make a contribution to national prosperity in the United Kingdom. 
<br><br>The Award is aimed at early to mid career scientists, engineers and technologists. The Mullard Award consists of a silver gilt medal, a prize of 2000 and a travel/conference grant of up to 1500.  

<br><br>HOW TO APPLY: A call for nominations is circulated to relevant university departments, learned societies, research institutions, Royal Society Research Fellows, the Fellowship, University Vice-Chancellors and Research Councils. The nominations are then assessed by The Royal Society Innovation Panel.
